About Ian

Ian Bailie is a British / Irish born International Production Designer

With over 30 years’ experience in the film industry Ian’s service is inexhaustible regardless of genre, period or narrative.

His art direction on period dramas such as Universal’s PRIDE & PREJUDICE (England 1813) and ATONEMENT (England and France 1939/40) received OSCAR & BAFTA awards and a nomination for excellence in art direction by the Art Directors guild of America.

The famous Dunkirk set in Atonement was a 1/2 mile long. The Medieval Fortress in Spyglass’ REIGN OF FIRE sported a footprint the size of 6 football fields. His work on Bruce Beresford’s EVELYN was set in Ireland in the 1950’s.

THE NEGOTIATOR was shot in Tangiers for Beirut 1972 & 1982.

In 2011 Ian based himself in Singapore and neighbouring SE Asian territories where he made several feature films and TV shows. Blue Mansion shot in Penang, The Last Real shot in Cambodia, and sci-fi feature BEYOND SKYLINE in Indonesia, set in ancient temple ruins, an underground catacomb under Asian jungle, and on an alien space-craft. The space-craft sets were scripted at heights over 100 feet high and he designed the VFX extensions for these huge interiors.

DEADMINE was set in a Japanese 2nd World War subterranean maze of interiors which he designed and built successfully on a ridiculously small budget.

He has designed several other horror films for Roger Corman (Ireland) and Neil Marshal’s THE RECKONING (Hungary) set in England in the 17th Century against the Great Plaque and Witch Hunts. The Reckoning won 11 awards at the FICOCC and NY Festivals 2020 including BEST ART DIRECTION.

John Michael McDonagh’s THE FORGIVEN was interrupted by Covid but completed after a 6 month lock-down before the end of 2020. During Lockdown Ian held through the B.F.D.G. one on one presentation seminars with young film makers knew to the industry. Something he really enjoys having lectured and given mastercallses at Tisch Asia Singapore, and the London Film School.

Since lock-down lifted Ian has worked in Hong Kong on Amazon’s EXPATS, Robert Schwentke’s SENECA – ON THE CREATION OF EARTQUAKES, GASSED UP (UK) and INSPECTOR SINGH INVESTIGATES. Inspired on his travels and by his experiences Ian continues to add to his extensive library of photographs and artwork.
